Abstract
326,289. Maxted, H. P., and Alford & Alder (Engineers), Ltd. Jan. 15, 1929. Blocks and shoes acting on drums; band.-In internal expanding brakes of the kind comprising a partly rigid, partly flexible expanding friction member such as described in Specification 301,261 the fixed pivot is disposed intermediate the ends of the friction member which are arranged to be forced apart by a floating cam or wedge. The brake member shown comprises rigid shoes 1, 2 connected bv a flexible band 3 which is extended beyond the shoe 2 to form or carry a third shoe 5 which is preferably rigid. The shoe 2 is mounted. on a fixed pivot 4 and may be as shown extend beyond its pressure applying surface. The operating mechanism shown in Fig. 1 comprises a floating wedge 6 connected by a link 13 to a lever 11 pivotally mounted on the fixed carrier plate. The wedge engages roller 7 on the ends of the shoes. Other rollers on the shoes contact with fixed guides 8. A spring 14 normally holds the shoe 2 against an adjustable eccentric stop 34 and a further adjustable stop 33 may engage the band 3. If the brake is applied with the drum rotating in the direction of the arrow H, a servo-action is obtained on the shoe 2 by the shoe 1 and band 3, the shoe 5 being applied but without such action thereon. If the drum is rotating in the opposite direction the shoe 2 is held out of operation by the spring 14. There is no appreciable servo-action in this case. The pivot 4 takes the whole of the braking torque in each case. A floating cam device which may be substituted for the wedge comprises a cam proper 16 slidably mounted upon a bar or part 26 on a rotatable operating member 20 which as shown is formed at one end 10 as part of a universal joint for connection to the external operating shaft. The cam has end slots 27 through which the part 26 projects and projections 17. for engaging the ends of the shoes 1, 5 and guide rollers 29. The ends of the shoes may have guiding slots engaging fixed pins.
