Abstract

Cellulose artificial silk, that is, viscose silk, cuprammonium silk and nitrocellulose silk, is caused to contract in length and at the same time to suffer a decrease in lustre so as to approach in appearance natural silk, by first treating with a protective sizing-agent such as gelatin, albumen or starch, then with caustic alkali solution of at least 18 per cent strength, and finally with dilute acid in such manner as to remove the alkali rapidly. The effect produced depends on the degree of tension employed, being the greatest when no tension is applied. The protective action of the sizing-agent may be assisted by the addition of glycerine to the caustic alkali solution; and if the silk is to be treated after scouring, bleaching or "wetting out," the protective agent may be rendered insoluble by the addition of aluminium acetate to the sizing-material.
