Abstract

In preparing solutions of starch the starchy material is first digested for about twenty hours with a dilute acid solution of potassium bichromate or permanganate, or with permanganate solution alone, the excess oxidizing agent being then reduced, for example, by addition of sulphurous acid. The product is treated with boiling water and the suspension clarified by addition of an alkaline substance to a concentration of about 0.01 normal. The last two operations may be combined into one. Suitable alkaline substances are caustic alkalis, ammonia, sodium carbonate, and borax.
