Two - stroke - cycle engines; cylinders. cooling.-The cylinder head d extends into the cylinder but leaves an annular recess within which works a skirt b forming part of the piston a. Inlet and exhaust ports are situated in the skirt b and cylinder wall, the inlet ports in the cylinder being adjacent to the cylinder head. T h e two inlet ports are diametrically opposite and are in a plane at right angles to the pair of exhaust ports. Ports j, k cause the circulation of air within the cylinder head, the ports j being so small that a partial vacuum is created during the working stroke and a rush of air takes place through the ports k when they are uncovered. There may also be ports in the cylinder head and wall and the skirt b whereby near the end of the exhaust stroke air is drawn into the transfer passages h. The air entering in advance of the main charge assists in scavenging the combustion space. This effect may also be produced by making the ports j open into the transfer passages; air entering by the ports k is forced out through the ports j by the skirt h on the working stroke. Non-return valves may be placed to control the .ports j. Air onlv may be compressed in the crank chamber, carburation taking place in the process of transfer to the combustion space.
