Abstract

226,984. McNeil, J. Jan. 17, 1924. Roller mills. - Relates to an arrangement of steam-engine or other prime-mover gearing and accessories for the driving of multiple trains of rolls such as those of sugar-cane mills. The whole train of mills is divided into two portions equal or substantially equal as regards the power they absorb and arranged substantially at rightangles to one another and driven through gearing by one prime mover while one or more conveyers transfer the material delivered from one portion to the other. As shown, the two portions A, B of the whole train of rolls are arranged at right-angles to one another and shafts C, D carrying the primary pinions E, F of the portions are extended towards one another and carry bevel-wheels G, H which gear together, the shaft C being extended beyond the wheel by and driven by a single-cylinder horizontal engine J. The cane is fed by a shaft K to the first portion A of the roll train and after passing through it is transferred to the second portion B by a right-angled conveyer L. A maceration and diffusion apparatus such as that described in Specification 116,521 may be embodied with the conveyer.
