Description

Jan. 24, 1928. 1,657,397
T. E. HOLMES THREE-HIGH PLATE ROLLING MILL Filed Aug. 25. 1923- Patented Jan. 24, 1928.
PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS EDMUND HOLMES OF GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
THREE-HIGH PLATE-ROLLING MILL.
Application filed August 25, 1923, Serial No. 659,371, and in Great Britain October 7, 1922.
Hitherto in three-high plate-rolling mills the top and bottom rolls have been driven while the central roll, movable vertically to bring it into position for coacting alternately with the top and bottom rolls, has been free so that positive or negative slip between it and the plate, due to variation in the peripheral speed of the rolls, (which might occur were the centre roll positively driven) may be avoided.
According to the invention all three rolls are positively driven, and the slip referred to is obviated by the provision in the driving means for the top and bottom rolls of relief devices adapted to slip upon a predetermined torque passing through them being exceeded- These devices may very conveniently be of the spring-loaded friction type.
In carrying out the invention any convenient form of gearing may be employed. For instance, and as in the example shown in elevation in the accompanying drawing, the top and bottom rolls A, B may be driven through universal shafts A 13 and conplings A A B B from gear driven lay shafts C, D in a gear housing E from the central shaft F of which the central roll F is driven through a like shaft F and couplings F F.
The relief devices G which may be of any convenient form (for example of the kind described in the specification of the prior Patent N 0. 1,842,264), are arranged on the universal shafts A B near the gear housing E.
What I claim is A three-high plate rolling mill co1nprising positively driven upper central and lower rolls, a power shaft operatively connected to the central roll for driving the same, lay shafts geared to said power shaft for driving the upper and lower rolls, and relief devices in the drive for the upper and lower rolls whereby either of the said upper or lower rolls may slip without affecting the drive of the central roll.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
THOMAS EDMUND HOLMES.
