Abstract
214,909. Blow, G. E. Sept. 12, 1923. Pencil and like holders.-A pocket or like knife, having one or more blades slidable longitudinally in the handle, has sharpening-means arranged at the end or ends of the handle to sharpen the blades as they are moved into or out of the casing, means being provided for locking the blades in the open or closed position. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the blade 1 is formed with a block 3 slidable in the handle 4 and having finger pieces 12 projecting through slots 14 in the sides thereof for actuating the blade which, in the open position, projects through a slot 10 in a block 9 at one end of the handle. The block 9 is formed with a pair of inclined holes 17 which accommodate sharpening steels 15, the cutting edges of which form a V-slot into which the edge of the blade is pressed by the spring strip 18 pivoted in the back of the handle; the strip has a projecting knob 20 which is held in engagement with the recess 21. or 22 in the back of the blade, to hold the latter in the open or closed position, by a slide 23 embracing the back of the handle and having edges 24 engaging in grooves in the sides thereof. In a modification the block 3, Fig. 6, is provided with a screwdriver 26 which can be projected. through a slot in the other end 11 of the handle, a second locking-slide 28 being provided for holding the screwdriver in the projected position. The screwdriver may be replaced by a second blade and a pair of sharpening steels arranged in the end 11.
