Abstract
11,318. Bond, E. S. May 7. Variable - speed epicyclic gearing.-A twospeed bevel gear is arranged at the side of the hub of the driving- wheel in a motor-cycle or other vehicle. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the pulley A, driven from the motor, drives the hub E of the road wheel through the two - speed gearing, a sleeve P, and a clutch interposed between the sleeve P and the hub E. The sun member b of the two-speed gear is directly driven by the pulley A, and the planetary-pinions c are carried by an enlargement of the sleeve P. A clutch member H locks the two b e v e lwheels b, t together to give the direct drive, or holds the bevel-wheels f stationary to give the indirect drive. The gear-changing clutch H is operated by a central rod m from the bellcrank lever s<1>, and the cone clutch r is disconnected against the action of the spring t by a sleeve s and bellcrank lever o. The eng i n e may be started without moving the vehicle by disconnecting the cone clutch r and rotating the sleeve P either bv a handle on the end l or a pedal-driven chain sprocket u. The operating-means may be disposed at opposite ends of the axle. Clutches adapted to allow slip or lost motion under strain. A modified form of clutch and operating-mechanism is shown in Fig. 3. Balls 8 pressed outwards by springs engage grooves in a member 9 carried by the hub. The balls 8 are carried in an axially movable member 13, which is pressed into gear by a spring 12. The bell-crank levers 2, 5 are pivoted on a common spindle 7.
