Abstract

1971. Whiteman, W. T., [Direct Drive Manufacturing Co.]. Jan. 26. Variable-speed friction gearing. - In variablespeed gearing of the type comprising a driving- shaft 4. a driven shaft 5, a clutch 7 having connexions with the shaft 4, a friction disk 18 driven from the clutch 7, and a friction-wheel 34 sliding on the shaft 5 driven from the disk 18, means are provided for locking the shafts 5, 4 together, operated automatically by the wheel 34. The shaft 4 carries a clutch 6 adapted to engage the clutch 7, which is slidably mounted on a loose sleeve 8. A bevel-gear 9 secured to the sleeve 8 meshes with a gear 13 secured to an oblique shaft 14. A bevel-gear 15 on the shaft 14 drives a gear 16, which is loose on the spindle 17 of the disk 18. The disk 18 is slidably connected to the boss of the gear 16 by interpenetrating lugs 19, 20, Figs. 2 and 6. The disk 18, which may be faced with aluminium, can be pressed against the wheel 34 by the relative rotation of annular cams 21, 22. The wheel 34 slides on a feather 38 on the shaft 5 and through it a variable speed is imparted to that shaft when the clutch 7 is in engagement with the clutch 6. When the wheel 34 is moved to the extreme left, it causes the shaft 5 to be clutched to the shaft 4 for direct driving. A friction drum 28 secured to the shaft 4 is encircled by a band 29, Fig. 3, the ends of which are connected to crossed levers 30, 31. The levers 30. 31 are pivotally secured by a bolt 32 to a wheel 33 fast upon the shaft 5. A cone 35 upon the boss of the wheel 34 thrusts apart the inner ends of the levers 30, 31 and causes the band 29 to contract and grip the drum 28. The wheel 34 and clutch 7 are operated by suitable striking-forks.
