18,035. Saunders, M. Aug. 9. Variable - speed epicyclic gearing for motorcycles of the type having two gearing-down epicyclic trains, comprises also a sleeve 8<d>, which is connected at one end to a planet-carrier 8 and at the other end to a free-wheel sprocket and is adapted to be driven by either at will. A friction clutch 14 with self-contained thrust is interposed between the sleeve 8d and a wheel hub shell 5. A clutch member 7 sliding upon a driving-sleeve 1 is adapted to engage clutch teeth 8<a> on the carrier 8 to produce a direct high-speed drive. Planetary gears 9<c> mesh with a fixed sun-gear 9<b> and with an annulus 9, which carries clutch teeth 9<a>. The second speed is obtained by sliding the member 7 into engagement with the teeth 9<a>. The lowest speed may be obtained through planetary gears 10<c> journaled on the carrier 8 and working independently, as shown in Fig. 1, or alternatively, through a train working simultaneously with the train 9, 9<c>, 9<b>. The three-speed gear in all cases drives the sleeve 8<d>, and from this sleeve the hub 5 is driven through the clutch 14. The clutch member 7 is connected by a disk 12 and a pin 13 to operating-means within a fixed axle 3. Springs 16 interposed between the carrier 8 and a movable plate 15 tend to keep the plate clutch 14 in engagement. The thrust of the springs 16 is taken. up by a plate 11 secured to the sleeve 8<d>. The clutch 14 is disengaged by means within the axle 3 acting on a pin 18. The free-wheel sprocket for alternatively driving the sleeve 8 by pedal-gear is mounted on a part 6 of the sleeve projecting from the hub 5. Specification 15,343/11 is referred to.
