Abstract

16,148. Dent, C. H. July 30. Motor road vehicles.-Relates particularly to beltdriven motor road vehicles and comprises an arrangement wherein the driven pulley, friction clutch, and differential gear are all mounted on one continuous shaft, so that the said pulley may rotate with the engine even when the vehicle is stopped. Fig. 1 is a sectional plan of the general arrangement, and Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the means for operating the clutch and brake. The shaft 1 is mounted transversely on the vehicle, and carries two pinions 4, 13 on loose sleeves 3, 12. One of the pinions 15 of the differential gear is fixed to the sleeve 12 and the other pinion 16 is keyed to the shaft 1. The driven belt pulley 2 is mounted loosely on the shaft 1, and is formed with one member 21 of a friction clutch, the other member of which slides on an extension 19 of the differential casing but is rotatably connected therewith. A slidably-keyed sleeve 5 is provided with claw teeth so that either the sleeve 3 or the belt pulley may be locked to the shaft 1. The differential casing is formed with a brake drum 17 on which a brake strap 18 acts. The friction clutch and brake are actuated by the same rod 23, which frees the clutch through a lever 24 'and fork 29. When the clutch is disengaged, further movement of the rod 23 causes a collar 34 on the rod to bear against a collar 33<1> on the end of the brake strap, and so apply the brake. Normally, the sleeve 3 is clutched to the shaft 1 and the friction clutch is engaged, but when the clutch is freed the cone 2 does not transmit any power to the shaft and the vehicle stops. For the reverse drive the friction clutch is disengaged and the break 18 applied, while the sleeve 5, which is operated by an independent rod 11, declutches the pinion 4 and connects the cone 2 to the shaft 1. The cone then drives the pinion 16 of the differential gear, and, since the geared casing is braked, the pinion 15 and therefore the chain pinion 13 is driven in the reverse direction, the chain pinion 4 running free.
