Abstract

25,893. Alltree, A. Nov. 8. Variable speed epicyclic gearing. - Threespeed hub gears for motor cycles of the two train type described in Specifications 11,315/07, 14,106/07, 1988/08, and 21,050/08, are modified so as to give a solid drive on the highest speed by making the annulus the driving-member of each train; and a disconnectible clutch is arranged between the gearing and the hub of the engine-driven belt pulley or sprocket-wheel. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the hub M of the belt pulley is connected by a multiple-disk clutch to the driving- annulus G. The planet-pinions E of the first train are carried by a frame C forming the driving annulus J of the second train, the planet pinions of which are carried by the wheel hub. In the position shown with the sunpinions K, L in engagement with teeth h, i on the hub, the drive is solid, and a greater or less reduction of speed is obtained by moving one or other of the pinions K, L into gear with a stationary clutch member B. The clutch plates are held against rotation in their respective boxes by bolts M<2>, N<3> which secure the end plates. The pulley hub M is carried between ball bearings V, and the movable clutch box N is slidably mounted in slots O<1> in a ring O adjustably secured to the member H, and is controlled by a spring P and lever T. In a modified construction shown in Fig. 2, a cone clutch is employed, and the broad teeth of the driving-annulus G formed on the driving- member H gear with the pinions D, E, which are mounted on the common planet carrier I secured to the wheel hub. The solid drive is obtained by clutching the sun pinions to each other, the smaller sun-pinion L engaging internal teeth on an overhung portion of the larger pinion K. Either gearing-down train is brought into action by moving one of the sunpinions into engagement with stationary clutch members W, X. The sliding clutch cone N is mounted in slots O<1> extending through the ring O and into the driving-member H, and is thrust into engagement with the outer clutch cone by a series of springs P<1>.
