Abstract

23,252. Beaumont, F. E. B. Nov. 4. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to two - speed driving-mechanism for bicycles &c. Two sets of chain gearing are used, arranged on the same or opposite sides of the driving-wheel. The lowspeed chain-wheel A is connected to the hub by a suitable ratchet or clutch such as is described in Specification No. 19,870, A.D. 1898, the high-speed chain-wheel F being carried on a sleeve F<1> and being movable laterally by a wedge I mounted on a lever and acting between an incline H and a spring G. When moved inwards, holes in the sleeve engage pins E<1> carried by a ring E connected to the hub by a clutch. When the high-speed gearing is in use, the hub overruns the chainwheel A. The clutches allow the driving-wheel to run free when the pedals are stationary. If both chain-wheels A and F are arranged on the same side, the latter is mounted on the ring E and is locked thereto when required by a sliding clutch, pins on which engage holes in the wheel F and ring E. According to the Provisional Specification, the clutch mechanism may be dispensed with in the case of the high-speed chain-wheel.
