Abstract

16,308. Sanders, F. L. Aug. 14. Driving-mechanism; clutches.-Relates to two-speed gear for velocipedes and other machinery. The Figures show the application to a bicycle. The driving- chain wheel a<1> is mounted loosely on the hub b<1> of a toothed wheel b mounted loosely on the crank axle c, and is formed with clutch teeth a<3>, which are engaged by a spring pawl e carried by the crank. A roller pinion d<1> carried by the crank engages with internal teeth a<2> formed on the chain-wheel and with the wheel b, the hub b<1> of which carries a ratchet-wheel b<2> adapted to be engaged by a spring pawl b<3> secured to the frame and connected to a cord b<4> by which it can be disengaged. The low speed is obtained when the pawl b<3> is disengaged, the pawl e then driving the chain-wheel. On fixing the pinion b, the pinion d' causes the chain-wheel to over-run the crank and gives the high speed. The pinion d<1> can be mounted so as to turn in the forward direction only, the pawl e and teeth a<3> being then dispensed with. When applied to other mechanism the chain-wheel may be arranged to drive the cranks.
