Abstract

2136. Rubery, A. Jan. 28. Clutches ; brakes ; driving-mechanism.-Relates to two - speed gears for motor cars, bicycles, tricycles, and the like. A chain-wheel a is fixed to the shaft b, upon a square part of which is mounted to rotate therewith the movable double clutch-piece h. The corresponding clutch-parts d, e are free to rotate upon the shaft, and are preferably mounted upon ball bearings c, and are driven at different speeds by means of chainwheels f, g. In the position shown, the part d of the clutch is driving, and the power is taken off by means of the wheel a. By moving the part h to the opposite side, the part e is made the driver, and, by placing the part h in the mid position, the engine is allowed to run free. The part his operated by a strikerj or by other means. Bands k of leather are fitted to the clutch-parts. A band or other brake may be fitted to act upon both drums d, e simultaneously, or separate brakes may be provided. Friction gearing may replace the chain gearing f, g, the part h may be keyed upon the shaft instead of being mounted on a square part of the shaft, the friction clutches may be replaced by positive clutches, and springs may be mounted on the shaft to prevent rattling. In a modified arrangement, the inclinations of the engaging parts of the clutches are reversed.
