Abstract

185,443. Robertson, C. March 31, 1921. Jib cranes.-The head-sheave 6 moves up and down the jib during luffing, under the control of a lever 8 pivoted on the jib at 9 and connected to the crane frame by a link 11 and to the pulley trolly 5 by a link 10. A counterweight 12 for balancing the jib is suspended by a rope 13 attached to the pulley trolly 5 and passing over a pulley 15. In place of the rope 13 and pulley 15, a rod may be connected to the trolly 5 and anchored to a link, another rope or rod being taken to the counterweight. The load moves in an approximately horizontal path 20, 21 during luffing; the jib is balanced approximately in all intermediate positions, but at the maximum and minimum radii the jib is not balanced, so that the luffing-motor becomes overloaded, even when no load is on the crane hook.
