Abstract

520,182. Jib cranes. STOTHERT & PITT, Ltd., and PITT, R. B. Oct. 10, 1938, No. 29327. [Class 78 (iv)] For luffing with controlled movement of load, in cranes of the type in which the jib is pivoted on a fixed horizontal axis on the framework, the load rope 11 is suspended from a pulley 12 on an arm 6.pivoted to the jib at 8, and thence passes over a pulley 10 to the hoisting drum 13. The arm 6 is supported by a rope 17 which passes over a jib-head pulley 18 to a fixed point 19 on the framework, or round a pulley at the point 19 back to a fixed point on the jib. When luffing takes place by operating the drum 16<SP>1</SP> controlling the cable system 14 passing round the pulleys 15, 19<SP>1</SP>, the arm 6 is raised or lowered by the rope 17 to compensate for the luffing to a greater or less extent, thus giving any desired path for the load hook 7 from level luffing to a steeplyinclined path.
