Abstract

183,228. Chew, L., and Jennings, W. F. April 18, 1921. Separating oil and gases in compressors used for refrigerating. The mixture of gas and oil is led from the evaporator side of the machine to an annular chamber within or adiacent to the stuffing-box which communicates with the crankcasing through the hollow crank-shaft, the oil and gas being centrifugally separated, the oil being applied to the bearings and the gas passing to the crank casing and thence to the cylinders. The Figure shows a vertical multi-cylinder compressor in which the return mixture of gas and oil is led from the evaporator side of the apparatus to a chamber 3 communicating with an annular chamber 4 at the end of the stuffing-box 5. An orifice 6 conveys part of the oil into the stuffing-box; the remainder of the oil and the gas flow through longitudinal passages 7 in the crankshaft from which transverse passages 9 convey the oil, which tends to be separated by centrifugal force, to the bearings 11 and through the hollow connecting rods to the cross-head wrist-pins 13. The gas freed from oil passes out at the end or ends 16 of the passages 7 into the crank casing and thence to the suction valves.
