Abstract

3081. Watson, H. B., and Billetop, T. C. Feb. 13. Compressing.-The compressor works at high speed and in two or three stages. The air enters the cylinder 2 through valves 16, and escapes through valves 17 in the piston 9 on its up-stroke into the chamber 18 above the fixed piston 10. Hence, after further compression, it escapes to the cooling-coil or through the valve 19 to the third cylinder 14, whence it is expelled by the plunger 15 through a valve and the cooling-coil 21. A piston 5, attached to the same crosshead as the piston 9, serves to circulate the cooling-water, which enters at 13, passes through the passages 12 to the chamber 26, and then between helical baffles 28 to the outlet 27. The parts which move through the water are made narrow at their ends to prevent impact. The entering air is moistened with distilled water sprayed from the pipe 24. The water or moisture, which is separated or drained from the compressed air by means of a separator, is led through a pipe 29, Fig. 4, into a draining-device consisting of a tubular chamber divided into graduated compartments by diaphragms 30 having graduated openings 32, the compartments and openings growing larger towards the outlet 33. The inclination of the draining-device is indicated by the horizontal dotted line C-C.
