Abstract

129,598. Wade, J. T. March 7, 1919. Compound piston pumps. - An air-compressor is constructed to draw air into the cylinder both through the crank case and through a valve at the cylinder top, and the suction and deliverypipes are enclosed in a water jacket in the upper part of the cylinder and are arranged so that a number oL compressors may be coupled side by side with common delivery and suction pipes; the crank shaft bearings are formed in two parts bolted together and enclosed in an air tight housing. The crank casing is provided with a valved air inlet 2 through which air is drawn at the outward stroke, while at the same time air is being delivered through a passage 14 and a valve 12 to the delivery pipe 11; on the return stroke, the valved inlet 2 closes, air is drawn into the top of the cylinder through suction pipe 9, valve 10, and passage 14, and at the end of the stroke the compressed air in the crank case passes into the cylinder through passages 8 uncovered by the piston. The suction and delivery pipes are surrounded by a water jacket 16; flanges 15 at the sides enable a number of cylinders to be coupled together. The bearings 18, 21 of the crank-shaft are made in two parts bolted together. The housing 19 is closed by a plate 20; the housing 25 is closed by split diaphragms 23 secured by a cap 26, springs 22 pressing against the bearing 21 and diaphragms 23. Lubrication is effected by the compressed air in the crank case, which lifts oil from a sump through a non-return valve.
