Abstract
181,170. Kennedy, E. N., and Kennedy, G. A. April 2, 1921. Hinges and pivots.-In hinged fasteners for use on collapsable suit-cases &c. in which the length of one member is variable, this member is of telescopic form with a pawl-and-rack engagement automatically released on turning the other hinged member. The invention is applied to both the hinge proper and the locking- member, and is described as applied to the latter. A channelled member g is attached to the lid of the case and has fixed within it a plate h having holes k against which slides a member m to which the pivot of a locking-hasp t is attached; the plate may also have a longitudinal slot x to receive a projection y on the member m so that this member cannot be entirely withdrawn from the housing g. Mounted on a pivot n within the inner member is a detent o, the nose p of which is pressed by a spring v so as to project through an aperture q and engage with the holes k. An arm r on the other end of the detent engages a slot in a rod s which bears against a cam-surface f attached to the locking-hasp so that when the hasp is in the raised position, as shown by the full lines, the detent is forced out of engagement with the holes and the inner member is free to slide in the housing. Locking the box automatically fixes it in any position, as shown by the broken lines. In the case of the hinge, the detent is released on raising the cover of the box.
