Abstract

Crank-actuated pumps; reciprocating-cylinder pumps; concussion-preventing and relief devices; valves and valve seats, arrangement of.-In pumps of the type comprising a piston 8 mounted within a ported sleeve 9 which is mounted within a barrel 10 with corresponding ports, the sleeve and barred are reciprocated relatively to one another and to the barrel by a crank 29 engaging oppositely inclined slots 14, 15 formed in the cross-heads 16, 17 carried by the piston and sleeve. In a double-acting pump, Figs. 1 and 2, the sleeve with closed ends 20, 21 has ports 22, 23 which alternately register with suction ports 24, 26 and discharge port 25 formed in the barrel. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, the barrel is formed with a suction port 32 and. a separate by-pass 33 extending from end to End of the barrel. The open-ended sleeve and the plunger are formed with discharge ports 34, 35 which register to permit of discharge from the by-pass into the crank-case. Both arrangements are applicable to pumps with radially opposed barrels, in which type a relief valve 39 is inserted between the crank-case and suction chamber. The pump shown in Figs. 1 and 2 may be made single-acting by using one end only of the sleeve and omitting the other end and its suction port.
