Abstract

Doubde-acting piston pumps; piston-packing substitutes.-The piston a of a pump is packed and lubricated by fluid contained in peripheral grooves i and supplied from the delivery chamber f through ports e, d in the cylinder b and liner c. The piston is long enough to prevent the port d from being uncovered at the end of the stroke. The piston is actuated by a steam piston j, the steam being controlled by a valve m as described in Specification 266,017. In the vacuum pump shown in Fig. 2, the packing fluid is supplied by an internal groove d in the cylinder connected by a pipe to a liquid tank. The cylinder is provided with passages t, u to equalize the pressures on the two ends of the piston at the ends of the strokes.
