385,642. Fuel-injection pumps. OLDHAM, R., Holmwood, Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire. Sept. 16, 1931, No. 38253/30. [Class 102 (i). In a fuel-injection pump a plug 19, Fig. 1, sealing the upper end of the pump barrel, forms a plunger operating in a reciprocating cylinder 6. The fuel is admitted to the pump chamber from an inlet 3 through passages 17, 16 in the cylinder and discharge takes place through a bore 5 in the plug 19. The cylinder is surrounded by a sleeve 7 rotatable by means ot a gear wheel 10 and rack 11 and formed with ports 18 having inclined edges. One port 18 co-operates with one passage 16 and a recess 17<x> in the plug 19 to terminate the injection. In a modification, Fig. 3, the sleeve valve is dispensed with and the cylinder 6 is slidably keyed to a member 21, which is rotatable by means of a rack 11. The plug 19 is formed with a port or helical groove 18 which cooperates with a radial passage 16 in the cylinder to terminate the injection. Alternatively, the plug is formed with a radial passage and the cylinder with a helical port. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the reduced upper end of the plunger 6 operates in a cylinder 19, forming a sealing plug, and having a suction port 16, which co-operates with a helical groove 18 in the plunger to terminate the injection. Several pumps may be controlled simultaneously by a single rack 11, in which case the plungers can be adjusted separately by moving the members 21 axially by means of nuts 22, the members 21 and racks 11 being formed with inclined teeth.
