Abstract

161,457. Fairfax, H. W. Gabbett-. May 12, 1920. Ordnance design; machine guns.-Consists in providing a rearwardly-extending sleeve or tube for guiding and dispersing the back-blast of guns which have a coil reducing cap of the kind described in Specification 161,082. Part of the energy of the back-blast may be utilized to operate the gun. In Fig. 1 the invention is shown applied to a field gun. The sleeve D is mounted on the carriage and has perforations H along its length and a deflector piece F at the rear shaped to deflect the gases through exhaust openings K. The cap A is a sliding fit in the interior of the tube D. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the perforated sleeve D is mounted on the barrel and forms a rearward extension of the recoil cap A. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the sleeve D is not perforated and has a single exhaust opening K. A portion of the exhaust gases may be led by a pipe P to drive a piston for the operation of the breech mechanism, as described in Specification 128,354, or for the operation of any other mechanism required in connection with thehandling of the gun.
