Abstract

1394055 Field-emission cathodes NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 18 July 1972 [9 July 1971] 32329/71 Heading H1D An electron discharge tube is provided with a field-emission cathode consisting of at least one carbon filament 46 having a pointed end 56 and mounted in a tantalum sheet 52 by means of tin solder 48. Alternatively, the fibre can be attached to a metal support by means of a conductive adhesive and the point formed by means of an electric discharge. The cathode can consist of an array of at least a thousand filaments. The cathode can be used in an electron beam machining apparatus, Fig. 1 (not shown), scanning transmission or reflection electron microscopes, Fig. 3 (not shown), X-ray tubes, colour cathode-ray display tubes or camera tubes, vacuum gauges or microwave tubes.
