Abstract

1379016 Cathode-ray display tubes PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 Jun 1973 [24 June 1972] 29533/73 Heading H1D A C.R.T. includes an astigmatic gun with cathode 6, first grid 7, anode 8 and acceleration electrode 9, focusing lens and display screen, grid 7 having an elongate aperture (e.g. elliptic), anode 8 having an aperture that widens towards the target in planes parallel to a first plane containing the system axis and the length direction of the elongate aperture, the undeflected beam impinging on the screen as on elongate spot having its length directon parallel to the length of the elongate aperture and focused so that electrons travelling in the first plane are focused at a point spaced from and on the gun side of the target, while electrons travelling in a plane at right angles are focused at the screen surface, and wherein the tube and potentials are such that #5% of the beam current at the second grid is intercepted by it. Elliptic aperture 17 in anode 8 has a short axis at right angles to aperture 16 short axis and develops into rectangular aperture 18. Reduction of effective emissive area to reduce described defects is produced by reducing anode 8 aperture dimension on the cathode side in the length direction of aperture 16, and electrodes 7 to 8 distance. Spherical aberration in the longitudinal direction of the spot may also be reduced by the homogeneous field at the cathode proximity due to diaphragming. Fig. 1 (not shown) includes a single gun (3 gun shadow mask tubes may also be used), Al layer (14), layer (15) of u.v. emitting indexing strips, the screen being phosphor strips separated by black inactive strips. Beam and phosphor strip widths are equal, the spot being elongate parallel to the strips. Dimensions potentials and cross-over positions are given. Dynamic connection need not be applied for spot rotation. The above gun in a shadow mask tube may avoid moire patterns. Specification 1,352,217 is referred-to.
