Abstract

759,944. Cathode-ray tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. March 2, 1955 [March 2, 1954], No. 6093/54. Class39(l). A cathode-ray tube gun consists of cathode 5, modulator 7, first anode 8 in the form of a plate, second anode 9 with cylindrical aperture of small diameter flaring to a large diameter, and third anode 10. The small diameter portion 18 of second anode 9 is cylindrical or conical and the large diameter part 17 is part spherical. Anode 9 may consist of a block of metal, or of insulating material with a conductive coating, or of sheet metal. Anode 8 is triangular and supported at the corners on the steatite rods 21. The other electrodes are supported by triangular flanges. Anode 10 is connected to a metal coating on the bulb, and may be constituted by the metal coating or may be of plate form. The arrangement is such that with appropriate voltages a first cross-over is formed " near to the first anode " and the first, second and third anodes focus the beam to " a small cross-section which remains substantially constant up to the screen." These expressions are defined in the Specification. With voltages, dimensions and spacings specified in the Specification, it is stated the neck length L is brought down from about the 16 to 18 cms. of a conventional tube to about 12 cms. The change in cathode-modulator spacing on warm up is also given. The cathode is supported within the modulator as described in Specification 499,532.
