Abstract
1389142 Surge arrestors COMTELCO (UK) Ltd 31 May 1973 25961/73 Heading H1D A surge arrestor comprises first and second electrodes 10, 12 aligned coaxially in an insulating sleeve 14 of about the same coefficient of expansion as the electrode material, the electrodes being spaced apart by a gap defined by the ends of the electrodes which are shaped so that one of the surfaces has a projecting part 25 and the other is flat or has a recess 30 and the gap has a narrower portion at a point across its width. The arrangement is such that in the event of a predetermined overload the electrodes will melt and fuse together. The electrode ends can be spherical Fig. 3 (not shown) or they can be arranged to overlap so that the active surfaces are parallel to the axis of the sleeve 14, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). The sleeve can have set-backs 90, 92 to prevent shorting as a result of sputtering. The arrestor can be filled with a rare gas and krypton 85 or another source of ionising radiation can be provided.
