Abstract

1,085,032. Surge diverters. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 9. 1965 [Sept. 11, 1964], No. 37227/64. Heading H2H. [Also in Division H1] A surge diverter for A.C. transmission systems comprises a sealed evacuated two-part chamber formed of insulators 27 in which are housed cylindrical main electrodes 11, 12 and trigger electrodes 38, 39, all mounted on terminal baseplates 15, 16 and surrounded over their spark gap region by an arc shield 29. Trigger electrodes 38, 39 are mounted on insulators 24, 25 containing resistors 22, 23 respectively connected between each trigger electrode and its terminal base-plate. These resistors, and a capacitor 26 formed by the interleaved portions 40, 41, 43 of the trigger electrodes, have suitable values to produce field emission at the trigger gaps 20, 21 upon the occurrence of impulse voltage in the system, which is followed by breakdown of the gap 17 between the electrodes 11, 12. The equivalent electrical circuit and a typical operation are described, Figs 4, 5, and 6 (not shown): The trigger electrodes may be flat in contour. Fig. 1 (not shown), or may be interchanged in position with the main electrodes which are then rod-shaped, the trigger electrodes having flanges passing through the insulators 27 for connection to one another and to the base-plates 15, 16 through an external network comprising a capacitor and two resistors, Fig. 3 (not shown). When located inside the chamber the resistors may be formed by conducting coatings on the support insulators.
