Abstract
1,254,934. Protective apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 4 Feb., 1969 [20 Feb., 1968], No. 6061/69. Heading H2H. A lightning arrester comprises a spark gap assembly having spark gap electrodes of such a shape that after an arc has been struck across the electrodes the arc is driven along arc running surfaces of the electrodes so as to be lengthened and extinguished without the aid of an additional electromagnetic coil device. A lightning arrester 1 comprises a housing 2 having terminals 3, 4 at the ends thereof, a non-linear resistor 10 and spark gap assembly 11 being disposed within the housing 2 and located between the terminals 3, 4 by means of a spring 14, the spark gap assembly being provided with an electrically conductive plate 12, 13 at the ends thereof. The spark gap assembly 11 comprises a plurality of porous plate members A-E formed of granulated aluminium oxide with a suitable binding material, the engaging surfaces of the members being shaped so as to form arc chambers in which are located pairs of electrodes 20, 22 forming arc gaps. The surfaces of the members A-E are provided with projections 30, 31 which engage the electrodes 20, 22 thereby controlling the electrode spacing. The electrodes 20, 22 are interconnected by a conductive link 23 and may be formed from generally U-shaped material with the exception of the end electrodes 26, 27 which are secured to the conductive plates 13, 12 at the ends of the spark gap assembly. The electrodes are shaped so as to have diverging arc running surfaces whereby the arcs are inherently driven to the walls of the arc chambers and extinguished. Each arc gap is provided with a pre-ionizing device which comprises a point metal electrode 32α fixed to one plate member which cooperates with an electrode 32h in the other plate member of a spark gap. The voltage appearing at the electrode 32a is provided by the self capacitive coupling between the electrode 32a and the gap electrodes 20, 22.
