Abstract
1332811 Hydraulic clutches K WILSON 10 Nov 1971 [10 Nov 1970] 53490/70 Heading F2C A main gear 2 having external teeth 3 is rotatably mounted on a shaft 1 and has internal teeth 4 which engage with pinions 5 mounted on a carrier 7 rotatable with respect to the shaft 1, a central drive pinion 8, engaging with pinions 5, having passages 100 extending to the roots of its teeth and communicating with a central passage 200 in the shaft 1. With a valve 10 open to allow oil flow to the passage 200 the pinions 8 and 5 act as an oil pump, oil being pumped into the passage 200 through the bores in pinion 8, but with the valve closed the pump becomes locked hydraulically, pinions 8 and 5 rotating as one with the shaft 1 so that the gear 2 is also constrained to rotate with the shaft. There may be several gears 2 on the shaft 1, so that selective operation of valves 10 can control gear ratio in a transmission.
