Abstract
445,625. Hydro-mechanical variable-speed gearing. WILSON, A., 16, Ambleside Road, Flixton, Lancashire. Oct. 22, 1934, No. 30182. [Class 80 (ii)] Hydro-mechanical variable - speed gearing suitable for vehicles comprises planet pinions D<1> carried by a driving hydraulic three - part casing A, A<2>, A<1>, and meshing with a sun gear D fast on a driven shaft B<1>, in line with a driving- shaft B. The middle casing part A<2>, Fig. 2, is cut away to form chambers in which the toothed gears rotate. Rotating with each planet gear D<1> on its spindle d are two paddle wheels E, E<1> one on each side. A wheel E<1> is shown in Fig. 5. The side casing parts A, A<1> are formed with separate chambers A‹, Fig. 1, in which the paddles E, E<1> rotate. There are closed chambers A<3> towards which the paddles E, E<1> are turning, and there is an inlet port a<3> to each paddle chamber A<5> adjacent an opening a<9> into a closed chamber A<3> so that oil pressure is built up in the chambers A<3> which resists the motion of the paddles. There are other chambers A<4> open to the paddles with other inlet ports a<2>. The chambers A<4> have outlet ports a, which when closed by turning valves G, Fig. 2, cause a further building up of pressure to the extent of producing a locked or solid high-speed. Oil in the bottom of a fixed casing C is raised by a revolving flange c into a tank F whence it flows inside a sleeve f to the inlet ports a<2>, a<3> which are regulated by sliding the sleeve f by suitable manual means at f<1>. This sliding of the sleeve f through links g<1> also regulates the outlet valves G. A disc B<2> loose on the driven shaft B<1> is provided to lock the drive on a low speed. The vanes of the paddle wheels E' penetrate into recesses b<5>, Fig. 1, in the disc B<2>, so that if outlets a<1> are closed, oil is trapped between the paddle wheel and the disc B<2>, effecting a lock. This closing of the outlets a<1> is effected by moving the sleeve f, Fig. 2, to the right which opens wide the ports a<2>, a<3> and turns the valves G to close the passages a<1>.
