Abstract

734,530. Change-speed gearing. GILES, J. G. Nov. 16, 1953 [Nov. 18, 1952], No. 29136/52. Class 80 (2). A power transmission unit giving four velocity ratios employs planetary gearing combined with positive displacement hydraulic units, each used alternatively as a pump and motor according to the ratio selected and each having a fixed displacement capacity. As shown, a driving sun gear 6 meshes stepped planet gears 3 &c. in a carrier 1, the planets also meshing sun gears 7, 10 rotatable upon a driven shaft 15. The sun gears 7, 10 are integral with gears 9, 12 meshing gears 14, 13 transmitting drive to or from two positive displacement hydraulic units 17, 18. The hydraulic units 17, 18 may be of either the rotary or reciprocating type, and are interconnected by pipes incorporating pressure relief valves 19 and a selector valve 20. For the first ratio, the selector valve 20 is set so that the hydraulic unit 17 runs freely and the delivery ports on the hydraulic unit 18 are closed, the sun gear 7 then rotating freely and the sun gear 10 being held stationary. For the second ratio, the hydraulic unit 18 runs freely, the delivery ports on the hydraulic unit 17 are closed, the sun gear 10 rotates freely and the sun gear 7 is held stationary. For the third ratio, the selector valve 20 is set so that the hydraulic unit 18 pumps into the hydraulic unit 17 and both these units rotate in the same direction. For the fourth ratio, the selector valve 20 is set so that the hydraulic unit 17 acts as a motor pumping into the hydraulic unit 18; the two hydraulic units then rotate in opposite directions.
