Abstract

1301911 Pressure vessel closures BVS 26 Oct 1970 [5 Nov 1969] 50769/70 Heading F2P A pressure vessel opening is closed by closure comprising a plug 3 having a frusto-conical face 7 converging away from the vessel chamber, a seal 5, and a plurality of locking segments movable radially along the frustoconical face, to lock the plug in its closing position, the segments having protrusions engaging corresponding recesses in the vessel wall 2. The locking segments 8 comprise two or more major segments separated by small gaps in which lie small segments with parallel walls. For opening, the small segments are drawn inwardly, and then the major segments are drawn inwardly to unlock the plug 3. The segments 8 may be operated by hydraulic rams 181, 182, or by linkages attached to axially sliding sleeves, one sleeve for the major segments and one sleeve for the small segments. Additional security of closing is obtained by withdrawing the major segments in a purely radial direction, whereby the pressure in the vessel has to be low enough to allow a ram 11, 12 to depress the plug 3 initially to allow the subsequent radial movement of the segments.
