Abstract

1,244,600. Pressure resisting closures. LUMMUS NEDERLAND N.V. 15 Sept., 1970 [7 April, 1970], No. 44053/70. Heading F2P. A pressure vessel, e.g. a heat exchanger, closure comprises a metal cover 6, supported on its outer side 15 by a plurality of support elements 7 locked in a recess 8 in the vessel wall by a detachable locking device 9, and a metal seal 12 welded to the vessel wall and the outer side of the cover. The cover 6 is seated on a shoulder 19 of the vessel wall and the support elements 7 are segments of a ring held in the recess 8 by a locking ring 9, bolted to the cover. The seal is a semi-toroidal metal ring 12. Axial bores in the locking ring 9 and radial bores 21 in the vessel wall allow for the insertion of pins to aid removal of the locking ring from the cover 6 and the segmented ring 7 from the recess 8 respectively after the bolts 11 have been removed. The metal seal 12 is then cut through by burning or grinding to enable the cover 6 to be removed.
