Abstract

1340474 Compression moulding R A E FJELLMAN 12 Sept 1972 [21 Sept 1971] 42283/72 Heading B5A The plattens of a compression moulding press (Fig. 1, not shown) are prevented from complete closure until the moulding material has begun to cure and shrink by a plurality of partly-extended piston and cylinder units 16, 14 fixed to one platten and engaging abutments 18 on the other, the units are then retracted to permit full compression,s and subsequently the piston and cylinder are extended to beyond their first extendeds position to open the mould 8, 10. Initially (Fig. 2a) pressurized fluid in bore 18 of stationary cylinder 14 urges piston 16 upwardly into engagement with a ring piston 34 which is urged downwardly with greater force on to shoulder 30 by fluid in bore 32. The upper platten is lowered by hydraulic rams (6) until abutment 18 engages piston-rod 16 and thereby closes air passage 22, the consequent rise in pressure in air line 20 triggering a timed dwell stage, after which the fluid is exhausted from bore 17 to permit final compression (Fig. 2b). The mould is opened (Fig. 2c) by exhausting fluid from bore 32 and feeding fluid into bore 28 to fully raise pistons 26 and 34.
