Abstract

1292593 Forging plastics materials GKN GROUP SERVICES Ltd 24 Dec 1969 [28 Sept 1968] 46188/68 Heading B5A A peripherally grooved pulley, or an internally or peripherally toothed gear-wheel, is moulded from a thermoplastic material blank 25, e.g. of polypropylene, nylon, or polyacetal, which may be reinforced with glass, carbon or asbestos fibre, which is preheated in a furnace to below the material melting point, e.g. to 5‹ C. below the crystalline melting point, followed by compression in a cavity defined by a stationary lower mould member 11, a surmounting stationary peripheral gear tooth defining member 20, and concentric vertically displaceable outer and inner plungers 12, 24 of an hydraulically actuated ram 18, the outer plunger 12 whereof is slidingly mounted on a ram part 17 and sealingly engages the upper surface of the member 20 under the compression of a spring 19 during continued movement of the inner plunger 24 to effect moulding of the blank 25. The plunger 24 has a gear-wheel bore defining projection 26, along which is relatively slidable a radially projecting bore keyway defining element 27 upon abutment with the lower mould member 11 during descent of the plunger 24. After 30 seconds under full compression, the ram 18 is raised and the gear-wheel is ejected by a spring loaded ejector located in the member 11. In moulding a grooved pulley, the stationary member 20 is diametrically split.
