Abstract
1,256,825. Winding webs. M. SHARKEY. 28 Jan., 1970 [5 Feb., 1969], No. 4089/70. Heading B8R. [Also in Division F2] An assembly for supporting a web roll comprises a shaft 2 carrying a tube 11 and two end flanges 5 with collars 6 which are releasably secured to the shaft by means of screws 7 and which are formed with projections 8 for centralizing the tube 11. In use with processing apparatus a web 10, e.g. the master paper in a pattern-copying machine (Fig. 2, not shown), having a width greater than the length of tube 11 is wound on to the tube with edges of the web contacting the inner faces of the flanges 5. When the web roll is complete, the screws 7 are loosened and the flanges 5 are simultaneously tapped lightly against the opposite edges of the convolutions of the web so that the convolutions are jogged into perfect alignment. When the web is aligned the flanges 5 are positioned against the opposite edges thereof and locked to the shaft to confine the realigned roll, which may then be used again in the processing operation. The flange 5 and the collar 6 may be separate pieces (Figs. 3 to 5, not shown). The projections 8 may be in the form of pins, as shown, or may comprise continuous rings.
