Abstract

Yellow-orange direct stilbene-azo or stilbene-azoxy dyes are prepared by aqueous alkaline condensation of the lithium salt of para acid (2-methyl-5-nitrobenzene sulphonic acid) and/or the dilithium salt of 4,41-dinitro-2,21-stilbenedisulphonic acid, the condensation reaction being carried out in presence of a reducing agent when the dilithium salt of 4,41-dinitro-2,21-stilbenedisulphonic alone is used or by aquoues alkaline condensation of a monolithium salt of 4,41-dinitro-2,21-stilbene disulphonic acid or a mixture of the lithium salt of para acid and a mono-lithium salt, monosodium salt or disodium salt of 4,41-dinitro-2,21-stilbene disulphonic acid the condensation being performed under conditions such that the ratio of lithium atoms to sodium atoms in the dye product is at least 1:2. The dyes are preferably obtained as aqueous concentrates used for dyeing paperpulp. Typical dyes are <FORM:1114944/C4-C5/1> <FORM:1114944/C4-C5/2> <FORM:1114944/C4-C5/3>ALSO:The lithium salt of 5-nitro-o-toluenesulphonic acid is prepared by adding lithium hydroxide monohydrate to the free acid. The mono-sodium-mono-lithium salt of 4,41-dinitro-221-stilbene disulphonic acid is prepared from the disodium salt by treating with sulphuric acid to give the mono-sodium salt followed by lithium hydroxide monohydrate to form the mono-sodium-mono-lithium salt. The dilithium salt is obtained from the disodium salt by an ion-exchange process.
