[Classes 1 (iii) and 91] A stable homogeneous detergent and watersoftener is obtained by heating together a sodium ortho-phosphate, borax, and water until the composition has a water content lower than that required to form Na3PO 412H2O and Na2B4O71OH2O and gives the characteristic X-ray diffrac ior pattern of ignited anhydrous sodium phosphate. Sodium carbonate or sesquicarbonate may be present, e.g., 25-33 per cent. by weight of the total salts. The detergent may be used to improve the lathering power of soaps, and in detergents containing hypochlorites, perborates, or other oxidizing agents. The borax may be -¢ by weight of the total salts ; the phosphate may be anhydrous Na3PO4 or the mono or dodecahydrate ; and the final water content may be 5-25 per cent. The heating may be in open pans to 107-115C. with or without further heating to 130-140C.; or it may be on a drying drum at 300-350F. For example : (1) 2 1b. of monohydrated trisodium phosphate and 1 lb. of borax are dissolved in 3 1b. of water, and.the solution reduced to a water content of 5 per cent. (2). 2 1b. of Na2PO4.12H2O, 11b. of borax, and 11b. of anhydrous Na2CO3 are dissolved in 4 1b. of water and reduced to a water content of 12.7 per cent.
