Abstract

Salicyclic acid is prepared by reacting a water-soluble salicylate and a strong inorganic acid by a process comprising continuously feeding the water-soluble salicylate and the strong inorganic acid into a reaction zone, vigorously agitating the reaction mixture during the course of the reaction, maintaining the reaction temperature between 50 DEG and 80 DEG C. and maintaining the pH of the reaction mixture between 1.8 and 2.5. The salicylate, e.g. an alkali metal salicylate, particularly sodium salicylate, is preferably employed in the form of an aqueous solution having a concentration of between 50 and 150 gms. of salicylate per litre of solution. When sulphuric acid is used as the strong inorganic acid it is used as an aqueous solution having a concentration of between 20 DEG and 60 DEG Baum<\>ae.
