A building beam comprises a flanged steel joist J encased partly or wholly in concrete C having at least one flange provided with holes H filled with concrete that is integral with concrete on both sides of the holes. The holes may be formed by punching or bending portions of the flange to an inclined position or at right angles to the flange. The beam may be of I, T, U or Z shaped section and may be of lattice construction. The number, or area, of the holes may diminish towards the middle of the beam.
