The upper chord of a composite metalconcrete girder comprises a gutter-shaped metal section 1, Fig. 2, having concrete filling 4, to form a compound body having a cross-section whose movement of inertia relative to its vertical neutral axis is greater than that through its horizontal neutral axis. The internal surface at least of the section 1 may be formed with corrugations, grooves, toothing, knurling &c., and the terminal edges 3 of the section may be embedded in the concrete filling as in Fig. 6.
