1,066,428. Facilitating passage of wheel chairs over stairs. R. I. ZAMOTIN. March 1, 1966, No. 8839/66. Headings B7D and B7H. A self-propelled wheel chair capable of ascending and descending inclined surfaces such as steps has drivable wheels 3, a retractable rear leg and wheel assembly 4, a rotatable disc and chain drive 5 for raising and lowering the rear leg and wheel assembly and an endless belt 6 driven by a chain drive 9 from wheels 3. In order to ascend stairs the operator backs up to the stairs and retracts the rear wheels until the belt 6 is in contact with the ground and it is then driven by means of the wheels 3. The belt 6 has an inner toothed portion of nylon and neoprene reinforced by cord or wire bracing and an outer surface of rubber.
