Abstract

1428315 Power-driven wheelchair E M RICHISON and E M RICHISON 25 April 1974 18030/74 Heading B7D and B7H A power-driven wheelchair includes endless traction belts movable to an operative position in engagement with the ground for negotiating stairs, the seat being tiltable rearwardly relative to the main frame of the wheelchair so that it assumes a horizontal position when the wheelchair is climbing the stairs. The main frame 12 supports two battery operated motors 148 driving stub axles 30. Pulleys 34 fast with the stub axles drive first endless traction belts 18. A sub-frame 36 pivotally connected to the main frame carries ground-engaging wheels 44 and pulleys 48 fast with axle 42. Second endless traction belts 14 pass around driven pulleys 34 and pulleys 48. A caster wheel 110 is attached to a rectangular frame 114 pivotally mounted on the main frame and is movable between a lowered position wherein the endless traction belts are held clear of the ground and a retracted position wherein the endless traction belts engage the ground (Figs. 6A-6E, not shown). The seat 130 is supported by members 132 pivotally connected to the main frame, a member 174 slidable in a channel in the back rest 154 and a collapsible stay 166, 168. The stay comprises a screw 116 rotated by a motor 164 and a cylinder 168 anchored at one end to the frame 114. In operation, the motor 164 is energized to collapse stay 166, 168. This action initially lifts the caster wheel 110 to bring the endless traction belts into their operative positions and then tilts the seat rearwardly. On reaching the top of a flight of stairs, the caster wheel may be lowered manually to provide support for the wheelchair as it passes over the top stair.
