Abstract

A process and device are disclosed for setting up a three-cutter machine by adjusting the supply station, the transfer station, the cutting station and the ejector according to a book format to be cut or in order to carry out maintenance work. During a computer-controlled setting up operation predetermined optimal positions for adjusting cutting parameters or for carrying out maintenance work are purposefully adjusted within one or several machine cycles. Method of setting-up a three-cutter machine by adjusting the feed station (10), the transfer station (12), the cutting station (14) and the ejector (16) to a book format to be cut, according to cutting parameters specific to the particular book format, or for carrying-out maintenance operations on a three-cutter machine, characterized in that, for the purpose of setting-up, the specific cutting parameters are input into a control computer (18) and, in a computer-controlled setting-up sequence, previously determined positions, optimal for the setting of the cutting parameters, are intentionally approached within one or more machine cycle phases and that static adjustment measures are automatically carried out by computer control in these positions or adjustment measures to be carried out manually are presented by an electronic display device (28), these are then manually performed and, after being performed, are acknowledged to the control computer (18), and that amplifying, dynamic adjustment measures are carried out during continuing running of the three-cutter machine or that, for the purpose of carrying-out maintenance operations, previously determined positions, optimal for this carrying-out, are intentionally approached in a computer-controlled sequence within one or more machine cycle phases and maintenance measures that are to be carried out are presented by an opto-electronic display device (28), these are then manually performed and, after being performed, are acknowledged to the control computer (18).

Method according to claim 1, characterized in that the cutting parameters for a book format for which the three-cutter machine is to be set up are input in a dialogue with the control computer (18), and that the extent of the positions to be approached and of the adjustment operations to be carried out is made as a function of the previously set cutting parameters.
3. Method according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the automatically performed adjustment measures are made in the sense of a control using a set-point/actual value comparison.
4. Method according to one of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that an allocation of the adjustment measures into, on the one hand, measures to be automatically performed under computer control and, on the other hand, measures to be performed manually, is made in such a way that the adjustment measures to be performed automatically under computer control relate to the dimensional setting of the transfer station (12) and of the cutting station (14), and the adjustment measures to be performed manually relate to the replacement of machine parts and amplifying dimensional adjustments.

Method according to one of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that the manually performed adjustment measures are monitered by sensors and that an approach to the next position provided in the setting-up sequence is not undertaken until an agreement has been established between the actual and set-point values.
6. Method according to one of claims 1 to 5, characterized in that, in the case of a complete setting-up sequence, the following adjustment measures are performed in the following sequence:
a) Inputting of the cutting parameters,
b) extension of the format plate (74) and of the ejector (16),
c) replacement of cutting table and cutters (82, 84, 86),
d) adjustment of lateral cutters (82, 84), head stop (54) and book stop (56),
e) adjustment of the book width,
f) adjustment of the format plate (74),
g) adjustment of the transfer station (12),
h) adjustment of the book stop (56), setting and adjustment of the ejector (16),
i) adjustment of the format plate (74) to stack height,
j) adjustment of the feed station (10), k) carrying-out of fine adjustments.
7. Device for setting-up a three-cutter machine by adjustment of the feed station (10), the transfer station (12), the cutting station (14) and the ejector (16) of the three-cutter machine by means of actuators associated with these elements to a book format to be cut, or for carrying-out maintenance operations, characterized in that, in addition to manually operated actuators, motor-operated actuators (20, 22, 24, 26, 114) are provided, which are connected to a control computer (18) and can be controlled by it, that in a memory (32) of the control computer (18) a setting-up or maintenance sequence programme is stored, by means of which, for the purpose of the adjustment of the cutting parameters or for the performing of maintenance operations, previously determined, optimal positions can be intentionally approached automatically within one or more machine cycle phases, and that the control computer (18) is connected to an electronic display device (28) for the programme- controlled display of the cutting parameters and/or of adjustment or maintenance measures would be performed manually and to an input device (30) for inputting the cutting parameters and for acknowledging adjustment or maintenance measures that have been performed.

Device according to claim 7, characterized in that the previously adjusted cutting parameters are stored in the memory (32) of the control computer (18) and that the setting-up sequence programme comprises a comparison programme section between the input cutting parameters and the previously adjusted cutting parameters and decides the extent of the positions to be approached and of the adjustment measures to be performed as a function of the previously adjusted cutting parameters.

Device according to claim 7 or 8, characterized in that, in addition to the actuators (20, 22, 24, 26, 114), actual value transmitters (34, 36, 38, 40, 110) are provided, which are also connected to the control computer (18), and that the setting-up sequence programme stored in the memory (32) of the control computer (18) comprises a regulating programme section for carrying-out a set-point/actual value comparison.

Device according to one of claims 7 to 9, characterized in that the actuators (20, 22, 24, 26, 114) and the additionally present actual value transmitters (34, 36, 38, 40, 110) are associated with those adjustment elements that perform the dimensional setting of the transfer station (12) and of the cutting station (14).

Device according to one of claims 7 to 10, characterized in that manual adjustment elements are equipped with sensors, which are connected to the control computer (18), and that the setting-up sequence programme comprises a comparison programme section which does not permit an approach to the next position provided in the setting-up sequence until agreement has been established between the actual and set-point values.
12. Device according to one of claims 7 to 11, characterized in that the actuators (20, 24) which, in operation of the three-cutter machine, are associated with highly loaded adjustment elements, each comprise actuator motors (42, 44) and clamping devices (46, 48).
13. Device according to claim 12, characterized in that with the adjustment element of the transfer station (12) that is heavily loaded when the three-cutter machine is in operation, there is associated, in addition to the first actuator (20) for the basic setting, a second actuator (114) for a fine adjustment that can be carried out also during running, and that the basic setting performed by the first actuator (20) can be fixed during continuing running by the clamping device (46).
