Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for cooling batches in discontinuously operating industrial furnaces, in particular steel wire or strip coils in bell annealers. whereby the batch heating and cooling take place under protective gas circulation.
- the heating of metal batches in industrial furnaces is usually carried out in a protective gas atmosphere, which usually consists of nitrogen with a hydrogen content between 0.5 and 7.0% by volume.
- a corresponding cooling time then follows the heating or glowing period. so far the shielding gas composition remains the same throughout the furnace journey and the reduction in volume of the shielding gas is compensated for by the contraction during cooling by the same shielding gas, d. that is, it is worked with protective gas present to a certain extent in the supply line.
- the disadvantage here is a relatively long cooling time combined with a comparatively high power consumption of the fan required for the protective gas circulation even during the cooling time.
- the invention is therefore based on the object of eliminating these deficiencies and of specifying a method by means of which the cooling can be shortened and the power consumption of the circulation fan can be reduced.
- the invention achieves the object in that the protective gas composition is changed after the batch heating has been completed before the start and / or during the cooling process in order to reduce the specific protective gas weight.
- the method according to the invention can be implemented in various ways. It is particularly expedient if the reduction in volume of the protective gas used during batch heating during cooling by contraction is continuously compensated for by a protective gas with a lower specific weight. However, it is also possible for the protective gas used during batch heating to be at least partially exchanged for a protective gas with a lower specific weight before the cooling process. As a protective gas with a low specific weight comes e.g. B. hydrogen. Ammonia cracked gas or the like in question.
- the furnace space When using hydrogen as an exchange or substitute protective gas, the furnace space is flushed or evacuated with nitrogen at the end of the cooling, in order to bring the protective gas atmosphere to a non-flammable concentration.
- a steel band coil was heated to about 640 ° in a protective gas atmosphere with 5% by volume H 2 in N 2 .
- the cooling took place with the same protective gas composition and took 18 hours.
- the active motor power of the circulation fan rose from 27 kW to 67 kW and the total power consumption of this motor was 980 kWh during the cooling period.
- the fan noise level at the end of cooling was measured at 83 dBA.
- a second cooling was then carried out after annealing under the same conditions, in which the reduction in volume of the protective gas due to the contraction was compensated for by hydrogen.
- the cooling time was reduced to 13 hours and the effective power of the fan motor only increased to 30 kW, which corresponds to a total power consumption of the fan during the cooling time of 360 kWh.
- the noise level at the end of the cooling phase could be reduced by 6 dBA.
- the time in hours is plotted on the abscissa, the ordinate indicates the temperature in ° C, the H 2 content in vol.%, The active power of the fan motor in kW and the noise level in dBA, only the cooling period being shown.

Description
B. Wasserstoff. Ammoniak-Spaltgas od. dgl. in Frage.
