Erik Mauritz Jeppsson, Limhamm (Sweden), has been named as the inventor. It is a basic requirement of a compressed air brake for freight wagons that the time to increase and decrease the pressure in the brake cylinder during braking and brake release is set fairly precisely (in the order of magnitude of 35 seconds to build up the brake pressure from zero to 950 / o of the maximum, and 60 seconds for releasing from full pressure down to 0.3 kg / cm2). In order to maintain the desired times, when using control valves with calibrated nozzles, it was important that the flow of air was kept reasonably constant; H. that the stroke of the brake piston in the brake cylinder was kept fairly constant at a desired length during braking.
Since the stroke of the brake piston becomes larger when the brake pads are worn, automatic brake adjustment devices have proven to be a very desirable aid for the correct functioning of the brake.
In order to enable a greater braking force for the loaded car than for the empty car, the brakes were also equipped with a load changing device. Initially, an additional brake cylinder was used for this purpose, which had to be switched on by operating a tap when the car load exceeded a certain limit. When adjusting the aforementioned cock, the calibration of the control valve was changed at the same time by switching on new nozzles, so that the filling and emptying times remained the same despite the much larger amounts of air to the two cylinders.
However, this device turned out to be rather expensive due to the need to use two brake cylinders instead of one, and due to the more complicated design of the control valve. A much cheaper device was created by the so-called. Mechanical load changing device, the z. B. is described in Swiss Patent No. 173966 and consists of two at different points of the brake cylinder lever engaging with a certain idle clutch rods and an engaging and disengageable stop to reduce the idle speed of the lower gear ratio of the brake cylinder lever determining the coupling rod.
In this case, however, in order to avoid the more complex design of the control valve mentioned, it was necessary to effect the brake piston stroke of as much as possible the same size with the two considerably different gear ratios.
For this purpose, the idle speed of the coupling rod that determines the lower transmission ratio of the brake cylinder levers, called the idle rod, had to be adjusted by means of a stop that was adjustable on this so that the stop that could be engaged and disengaged was in the engaged position Moment collided with each other, where when braking, the brake piston stroke regulated by the self-acting brake adjustment device was sufficient to apply the brake pads against the wheel tires and initiate the development of the brake voltage.
To ensure that this was always possible, the brake adjustment device had to be double-acting and controlled in direct dependence on the movement of the brake piston (see Swiss patent no.149304) that it actually ensured that the Brake pads against the wheels at a certain piston travel, regardless of the gear ratio engaged, he followed.
In practice, however, it turned out that, while one could count on setting the control of the brake actuation device to a desired value of the brake piston stroke with satisfactory accuracy, this is far from with the corresponding setting of the adjustable stop on the lower one Transmission ratio of the brake cylinder lever determining clutch rod was the case.
Despite clear and apparently simple instructions on how to adjust the position of the adjustable stop on the coupling rod, the number of cases of incorrect adjustment increased all too often.
Under these circumstances it should be obvious that it would mean a great step forward if it were not necessary in practice to make a special setting of the empty speed of the empty bar on each car without having to equip the brake with a special control valve, So-called standard control valve, which makes the filling and emptying times of the brake cylinder independent of the stroke length of the brake piston.
The invention relates to an education from the brake, which allows the use of a simpler control valve of common Ausfüh tion and yet does not require a special setting of the idle bar on each car.
An example embodiment of this brake is shown in the drawing, wherein Fig. 1 shows a schematic picture of the air brake, which has a load changing device of the type indicated in Swiss Patent No. 173966, and Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal section through the load changing device.
The brake cylinder is designated by 1 in FIG. 1. During braking and brake release, this is filled with compressed air or emptied of compressed air through a control valve, not shown, which can be of any desired type. The cylinder levers 3 and 4 are connected to each other by engaging coupling rods 5 and 6 at different points of the same with a certain idle gear. The coupling rod (load rod) 5 determines a higher and the coupling rod (empty rod) 6 a lower transmission ratio of the brake levers 3 and 4.
The lower transmission ratio is switched on in that a stop 11 is moved into the path of movement of a stop 12 on the empty rod 6 for the purpose of limiting its idle speed. The stop 11 that can be engaged and disengaged is provided in a housing 9 which is rotatably mounted on the fixed point lever 4 by means of a bolt 8 passing through an elongated hole 7 in the empty rod 6. The housing 9 is guided by an extension of the empty rod 6 extending through the same, and the stop 12 is attached to this extension.
The stop 12 is not adjustable, but before installation in the brake linkage in a properly chosen, unchangeable position on the extension of the empty bar 6 firmly arranged. In other words, the .In Fig. 2 with sx denotes the measure of that idle speed of the empty rod 6, which still remains between the two interacting stops 11 and 12 in the engaged position of the stop 11 and in the completely released position of the brake, to a non-changeable Set value. So that the position of the stop 12 on the empty bar 6 cannot be changed, the stop 12 can expediently be formed in one piece with the empty bar 6.
In the brake, a double-acting self-acting brake adjustment device 20 is included, which is controlled in direct dependence on the brake piston movement, the adjustment to large block clearances is not carried out step by step and thereby the process is prolonged, but an axial displacement of the actuator for quick action the brake adjustment device is achieved in such a way that the adjustment device sets the pad clearances at each brake release to the value that corresponds to the desired constant value of the application stroke of the brake piston.
For this purpose, according to Fig. 1 of the brake adjuster 20, a control lever 21 zugeord net, which is approximately parallel to the brake lever 3 actuated by the brake piston rod 2 and at its end adjacent to the brake piston rod by a link 23 with a fixed point when the brake is released 22 is connected. The control lever 21 is in greater proximity to its other end, with which it directly actuates the axially displaceable actuating member of the adjusting device 20, connected to the brake lever 3 by a link 24, preferably at the same point at which the load rod 5 engages.
The progress achieved by the brake described is that, still using a customary, simple type of control valve, which is used to maintain the correct times for the pressure increase and pressure decrease in the brake cylinder when braking or reducing the pressure.
Brake release is dependent on the maintenance of a predetermined value of the application stroke of the brake piston, which in Fig. 2 with s, designated measure can set to a non-changeable value, which is neither when installing the load changing device in the brake linkage of the individual car nor later the regularly recurring inspections is changed.
A fixed definition of the measure. can only be achieved because of the combination with the piston stroke controlled in direct dependence on the brake, fast-acting Bremsnach adjusting device 20. Theoretically, the sX dimension is correct when it is just so large that the stop 12 comes to rest against the stop 11 when the brake is applied, where the load-changing device is set in the position for empty braking, and thus the empty bar 6 is just in activates the moment when the brake piston in the brake cylinder has moved so far
that the brake pads have pressed against the wheels and braking tension is beginning to develop in the brake linkage. When using an unchangeably fixed, equally large sx-dimension for different types of wagons in the wagon fleet, to avoid the risk of one of the different wagons being unintentionally braked via the load bar, although the load-changing device is set for idle braking, the unchanged Lichly determined sx-dimension of the same size for all wagons must be at most equal to the theoretically correct s "dimension for the type of car in the fleet for which the theoretically correct sx-dimension is smallest.
While it has been customary up to now and has been found necessary or expedient for various reasons to design the brake linkage in such a way that the cylinder levers diverge as seen from the brake cylinder when the brake is completely released and are parallel during braking with normal brake piston stroke, the brake linkage in the case shown in Fig 1 represents the training set up in such a way that the cylinder levers 3 and 4, as shown, are parallel when the brake is completely released.
This has the advantage that the brake linkage can also be standardized with regard to the lengths of the coupling rods 5 and 6 that connect the brake levers to each other, without taking into account the fact that the points of application of the coupling rods on the cylinder levers for different types of car at different points of this Need to move levers.
This further possibility for standardization is an advantage which, as practical experience has shown, can be achieved in combination with the training described above, thanks to the fact that this training provides a guarantee that no abnormal braking occurs large piston stroke can occur, which could otherwise endanger the correct function of the brake.
