variations importantes. Cette caractéris tique est particulièrement avantageuse pour l'alimentation directe en combustible des car burateurs des moteurs à explosion. En effet, dans cette application spéciale, le flotteur -et le pointeau contrôlant l'admission -du com- bus@tible au carburateur agissent en créant une résistance plus ou moins grande au re foulement;

Pump, usable in particular for supplying carburettors. The present invention relates to a pump which can be used in particular for supplying carburettors and its main object is a particular arrangement for automatically limiting or interrupting the flow of the pump when a greater or lesser resistance opposes the delivery, without, that the discharge pressure nevertheless undergoes.
significant variations. This feature is particularly advantageous for the direct supply of fuel to the carburettors of internal combustion engines. In fact, in this special application, the float - and the needle controlling the admission - of the fuel to the carburetor act by creating a greater or less resistance to the backflow;
for correct operation, it is necessary that the pump flow rate is automatically regulated under the influence of this resistance, so that the discharge pressure remains constant and does not modify the operating conditions of the float and needle. The pump according to the invention is characterized in that one of its walls is movable and subjected to the discharge pressure, so as to move when this pressure reaches a rate determined in advance and to create inside even of the pump body, parallel to this wall, a bypass li mitting the flow rate of the pump.
As a result of this movement, the pumping effect is automatically reduced or stopped even within the capacity of the pump body where the volumetric variation occurs. In addition, friction inside the pump is largely eliminated; when the pump operates in gasoline or in any other liquid dissolving lubricants, the risks of seizing or rapid wear are therefore greatly reduced.
The displacement of the wall is also used for priming and disengaging the pump.
In the accompanying drawing, given by way of exemplary embodiment: FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section of a rotary positive displacement pump along line 1-1 of FIG. 4; Figs. 2 and 3 are dirty cross sections along lines 2-2 of fig. 1, respectively; Fig. 4 is a plan view; Figs. 5 and 6 are dirty cross sections along lines 5-5 and 6 = 6 of fig. 1, respectively; Fig. 7 shows a variant of the device of FIG. 1;
Fig. 8 shows schematically, in axial section, an alternative pump, and FIG. 9 is a cross section of FIG. 8.
In the drawing, 1 is the pump body comprising two bosses in which are arranged a suction valve box 2 and a discharge valve box 3, the construction of which will be described below.
Inside the pump body is fixed a part 23 comprising, on the one hand, an eccentric cage 23a of large diameter, and, on the other hand, a reduced part forming neck sinet 23b. In the eccentric cage 23a turns a bushel 24 extended by a shaft 24a centered in the bearing 23b and provided at its end with a screwdriver slot 23c, allowing it to be animated in a circular movement by means of a member any control having a tab penetrating the slot 23c.
In the plug 24 is made a transverse slot in which are housed two pallets M and 26 (fig. 5) each pierced with one or more blind holes in which are housed two coil springs 27 and 28 which tend to move the pallets away. 'from each other and, therefore, constantly maintain the ends of the pallets in contact with the interior of the eccentric cage 23a.
These pallets separate the eccentric ring-shaped gap existing between the cage 23a and the plug 24 into two compartments 29a and 29b. For the direction of rotation indicated by the arrow f, it can be seen that the compartment 29a communicates with the suction pipe via a channel 30 and that the compartment 29b communicates with the delivery pipe via a channel 31.
The shaft 24a, centered in the bearing 23t), further passes through a stuffing box formed by a seal 32 clamped between two surfaces belonging, one to part 23b, the other to a part 33. This part is pressed on the seal by a nut 34 and a strong coil spring 35 housed in the nut 34 and which maintains the pressure of the part 33 on the seal, so as to avoid any danger of leakage in the event of wear of the attached. The nut 34 has a longitudinal groove 34a in which the lug of a stop screw 36 engages. Similarly, the part 33 comprises a longitudinal groove 33a in which the lug of a screw engages. off 37.
The part 33 also has a recess 33b communicating with a circular groove 33e connected by a channel 38 to a capacity onto which a pressure lubricator is screwed. This cavity can also be closed by a plug 39 and admit the lubricant under pressure by a channel 40 connected, for example, ià a pressurized lubricating pipe of the engine to which the pump is fixed.
On the pump body 1 is fixed, using bolts such as 41, a casing 42, inside which is an elastic piston 43 forming a sealed envelope, and having folds in the direction of the length, so as to have a certain deformability in the longitudinal direction.
At each end, the elastic piston is connected in a sealed manner to a fixed part 44, clamped between the casing 42 and the pump body 1. The movable end of the elastic piston is connected by a washer 45 to a tubular part 46, in which is fixed a rotating rod 47. The ball is held by a grain 48 in a cup 49 integral with a movable wall or plate 50. This plate 50 has an annular part having a perfectly erect and lapped face which s 'presses exactly on the corresponding face, also drawn up and lapped, of the bushel 42 and of the cage. The plate 50 can therefore seal off the internal capacity of the pump body, and effectively constitutes a wall of this pump body.
The plate 50 has two recesses 50b, leaving between them a central part 50a, which carries the bowl 49, which penetrates into a hole made between two bosses 44a, 44b in the form of crown portions in the center of the part 44. These bosses, which pass through the recesses 50b of the plate 50 abutting the plug 23 in the axial direction and also prevent the plate 50 from being driven by the rotational movement of the plug (Fig. 3).
The plate or wall 50 is pierced with a hole 50e (fig. 6) facing an opening 44c of the part 44.
Through these two openings, the interior of the pump body is in communication with the interior of the elastic piston.
Inside the tubular part 46 is a coil spring 51 which takes support on a ring 52, screwed on a sleeve 53, journaling in the housing 42 and which constantly tends to compress the elastic piston and to press. the wall 50 on the ground face of the plug 24.
An adjustment button 54, fixed on the socket 53, allows the latter to be animated in a circular movement. As the sleeve 53 cannot move longitudinally, thanks to a shoulder 53a, if it is imparted a rotational movement using the button 54, it causes the longitudinal displacement of the ring 52, screwed on this sleeve in the manner of a nut, and the rotation of which is prevented by a screw 55, passing through a recess of the casing 42. This recess has a shoulder 55a, on which the head of the screw 55 can come abut, which limits the displacement of the ring 52 inwards.
An axis 56, screwed into the tubular part 46, slides inside the sleeve 53. An operating button 57, integral with this axis; allows to move it longitudinally.
The interior of the housing 42 can be filled with lubricant using a lubricant such as 58, and can be emptied using a plug such as 59, placed at the bottom.
Fig. 2 shows the construction of cla pets. The suction valve box comprises a cavity 2a in which there is a pet valve 4 resting on a valve seat 5. The lifting of this valve is limited by a stop 6 resting on a shoulder formed in the cavity 2a and held in place. placed by a coil spring 7. A plug 8 closes the upper part of the valve box and a seal 9 ensures the seal.
The boss carrying the box to. suction valve also features. a cavity 2b in which is disposed a filter 10 held in place by a coil spring 11 bearing on the plug 1.2 which closes the lower capacity of the cavity 2b with the interposition of a seal 13. In the boss 2 opens the suction pipe 14 of the pump.
The boss 3 contains the delivery valve box which is made up of the same elements as the suction valve box, and in particular a valve 16.
In the boss 3 opens the delivery pipe 22 of the pump.
The operation is as follows: the shaft 24a being driven in a circular movement, it drives the plug 24 inside the eccentric cage 23a. The movement of the pallets 25 and 26 produces a volu metric variation in the chambers 29a and 29b. The liquid is sucked through the suction valve box 2 and is discharged towards the discharge valve box 3.
The wall 50 being kept applied to the lapped face of the plug and its cage, both by the elastic piston 43 and by the coil spring 51, the internal capacity of the pump body is closed in a étancbe manner; the pump works like an ordinary rotary vane pump.
Through the groove 33b and the channels 38, or 40, lubricant is admitted around the shaft 24a at a pressure greater than the discharge pressure of the pump and the lubrication can be ensured effectively, the stuffing box being constantly soaked with lubricant. If the pumped liquid is petrol, no seizure can occur in the stuffing box.
As long as the repression of the. pump is free, the parai 50 remains applied to the wood bucket and the cage, but if the pump flow rate becomes greater than the demand, the discharge pressure increases and the same pressure appears inside the elastic piston thanks to the ports 50c and 44c. When this pressure reaches a rate determined in advance, it exceeds the tension of the elastic piston 43, and of the spring 51.
The wall 50 moves aside and a deviation of variable importance is established, parallel to the movable wall, in the very interior of the capacity where salt produces the volumetric variation. It follows that the wall 50 is not subjected to the effects of inertia of the moving liquid, unlike. this takes place in pumps comprising a bypass channel and valves, the latter always opening in the direction of circulation of the liquid in the channel.
The pump flow being chosen to be greater than the demand, the. wall 50 will be. almost constantly pushed aside, which considerably reduces the friction inside the pump, which can. therefore, operate without any other wise grease than that of axis 24a.
In addition, the movement of the mobile wall limits the. discharge pressure at a rate determined in advance, independent of the. rotation speed. The pump is therefore self-regulating and can be used for supplying. Cburettors for explosion engines, fitted with a constant level tank or a fuel-dosing device.
The two valves are necessary for the correct operation @of the pump at low speeds of rotation, -and in. the case of a great height -d'aspiration.
On the one hand, for low speeds, the delivery valve in fact opposes any return of liquid from the delivery pipe to the. pump and prevents any drop in pressure prejudicial to proper operation.
On the other hand, the: two valves, suction and -discharge acting in the same direction, both oppose the -dispriming of the pump during a momentary stop.
In addition, it can be seen that by imparting reciprocating movement to the rod 5,6, a variation in volume is created inside the elastic piston 4'3. This variation is transmitted via the 44e -and 50e openings inside the pump body provided with two valve boxes.
The elastic piston and the valves therefore constitute an auxiliary pumping means, capable of being actuated from outside the pump without the valve of the latter being in motion, and particularly advantageous for the priming of the pump. the pump in the hand.
Finally, using the rod 56 and the button 57, the part 50 can be kept away from the plug and thus create, inside the pump body, a bypass equivalent to or greater than the flow rate of the pump; the flow rate of the pump is thus limited or canceled, which is then disengaged.
This disengagement can obviously be achieved by any suitable means serving to keep the wall 50 in a position such that the pumping action is canceled.
Finally, in certain cases, particularly in order to conserve power to an engine at a high altitude, it is necessary to run it from a compressor which delivers air into the carburetor at a variable pressure. In order to obtain good operation of the carburetor, it is necessary that the pressure of the fuel delivery to the carburetor varies simultaneously and in the same amount.
This operating condition is easily achievable without an additional mechanism with the pump described above. In order to restore balance, it suffices to exert inside the casing 42 a pressure equal to the pressure exerted by the compressor on the carburetor. One can, for example, provide on the casing a special tubing or replace the grease 58 or the plug 59 by a fitting, making it possible to connect the casing 42 by a tube with the discharge pipe of the compressor.
Of course, instead of controlling the movable wall 50 by means of a bellows, one could act .directly the pressure on this movable wall, .as represented at the. fig. 7, which shows a rotary pump similar to. that of FIG, 1, but in which the wall 50 is connected to a deformable wall 90 intended to separate the pump from the chamber 91 of the casing 92, subjected to the atmospheric pressure or to the discharge pressure of the compressor. power supply. The operation is identical to that described previously.
In general, moreover, the construction described above is given purely by way of example and can receive numerous modifications. Thus the bellows 43. could be replaced by a membrane, defarmable wall, etc.
Likewise, the pump can be rotary or reciprocating, positive displacement or centrifugal, gear or frame, etc.
Thus, in Figs. 8. And 9, we have. shown a reciprocating piston pump of a conventional type in which 70 designates the cylinder dre, 71 the piston separating the cylinder into two chambers 70a -and 70b, 72 the valve suction, 73 the discharge valve, 74 the pet valve -of the piston.
The wall element 75 can slide in a guide 70e formed in the cylinder 70. This wall is integral with the free end of an elastic piston 7 @ 6 via the tubular part 77. The other end of the elastic piston -is connected to the part 78, which is kept fixed between the cylinder 70 and the housing 79. A coil spring 80, placed between the bottom of the part 77 -and a positive adjustment -dis consisting of a sleeve 81 and .a threaded rod 82, tends to keep the wall 75 applied against the piston.
A rod 83, provided with a button, makes it possible to act from the exterior on the wall element 75. A hole 75a communicates the upper chamber 70b with the interior of the piston.
The operation is absolutely identical to that described above for the. rotary pump. The pump is supposed to be primed. when the piston moves up and down. up in the direction of the arrow f, it sucks the liquid through the valve 72, discharges it through the valve 73, and the wall 75 is pressed on the piston as long as the discharge is free.
But, if the pressure exceeds the expected rate, this pressure acting inside the bellows has the effect of moving the wall 75 and establishing a direct communication between the two chambers 70a and 70b.
It should be observed that in. This pump system, the only active stroke, producing the suction and the discharge, is that from bottom to top, the reverse stroke, from top to bottom, having only the effect of passing the liquid from the pump. chamber 70a in chamber 70b, returning the piston to its starting point, for a new active stroke.
We see that during this active race. the piston 71 sucks from one of its faces and discharges from the other, absolutely like the paddle of the rotary pump described above. The movable wall also acts as in the previous case to create, when the pressure reaches a determined rate, a direct communication between the suction and the discharge,. Within the same capacity where the volumetric variation occurs, l The flow occurs parallel to the movable wall.
It will also be noted that it is possible, by acting on the rod 8.3, to cause, from the outside, the breaking of the pump, without the piston thereof being in motion, and also to cause its disengagement. , while maintaining with the help of the same rod, the wall 75 separated from the udder.
